A short profile on past and present members of the Girls Heart Runners Relay Team:

Serena Eley (GHR captain) is a postdoctoral researcher in physics at Los Alamos National Lab. She earned her PhD at the University of Illinois and B.S. from the California Institute of Technology with a degree in physics, where she ran on the track and cross country teams. As an ultrarunner backpacker, and world traveler.

Kelley Hess (GHR co-captain)  is a postdoc at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.  She received her PhD in astrophysics at the University of Wisconsin Madison. She also earned her B.S. from the Cornell University with a degree in physics, where she was a member of the soccer team. Kelley is a marathoner, a category 2 cyclist, and ironathlete who has qualified for Kona.

Notable Races: Mad City Marathon (1st female overall), Boston Marathon, Phoenix Rock N Roll Marathon (3 hrs 5 min), Chicago Marathon, Collegiate National Championship At Buffalo Springs Lake 2010 (3rd in age group), Kuparisaari Triathlon (1st female overall), Wisconsin Ironman (7th in age group), Ironman Arizona (1st in age group, going to Kona!)

Kate Kostal graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a B.A. in advertising.  She is an active triathlete and marathoner.

Jenn Burke is an athletic trainer from the St. Louis area. She worked with athletes at the Beijing Olympics in their high performance training center.

Jordan Wirfs-Brock is a data curator.  She graduated from  the University of Colorado Boulder in environmental journalism. She also ran on the track team at M.I.T. while studying aeronautics.

Ana Houseal earned her Ph.D. in Science Education, studying the connections and effects of Student-Teacher-Scientist Partnerships, at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.   She studied these interactions in a geomicrobiology project, investigating carbonate hot spring systems at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park.

Anna Christian is a graduate student in a architecture at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.

Nicole Drummer graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she studied chemistry, and went on to work at Atmel Corporation in Colorado Springs. As an experienced triathlete and USAT certified coach, she is a trainer for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program. Niki Mansukhani is a graduate student in material science at Northwestern University.  She studied physics at University of Urbana-Champaign and ran on her high school cross country team in Naperville, IL.

Sarah Saffa is a graduate student in Latin American Studies at Kansas University, and is entering a Ph.D. program at a university in New Orleans. She ran on the prestigious cross country team at the University of Arkansas.

Carie Frantz is a graduate student in geobiology at the University of Southern California and earned a B.S. in chemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle.  An all-around outdoorswoman, she's an excellent climber and skiier.

Kanupriya Pande is a graduate studenet in physics at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.  She is both a long distance runner and a cyclist.

Tien-Tien Yu is a graduate student in physics at the University of Wisconsin Madison.  She double majored in physics and mathematics at the University of Chicago, where she ran on the cross-country team for one season.

Laura Jakosky ran on the cross country and track teams at the University of Arkansas, where she majored in Marketing Management and was a four-time NCAA Academic All American.  Laura ran post-collegiality, culminating her career at the 2008 National Cross Country Championships. She now works in Public Relations for Fleishman-Hillard in New York City and paces for Nike's RunNYC training group.

Hillary St. John is a graduate student in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  She earned a B.S. from St. Lawrence with degrees in Biology and Chemistry while running for the St. Lawrence track and cross-country teams.  Now that she is out of college team racing, she has been running longer distances and loving it!  She completed her first half marathon, the Haunted Hustle Half, in Middleton, WI (Oct 2010) and is running in the Chicago Marathon (2011).

Rebecca Metzler is an assistant professor at Colgate University.  She earned her Ph.D. in physics at the University of Wisconsin Madison.

Maureen McKee graduated from law school in upstate NY, then became a public defender in Seattle, WA, where she currently represent juveniles.  During the summer of 2010, she completed her first half-ironman in Bend, OR.  In January 2011, she became hooked on boxing and now practices daily.

Henrietta Aitken A native of the UK, for many years Henrietta considered running as 'cross-training' to complement her lightweight rowing ambitions. However, after competing in a few fun multi-sport events, it became apparent that running was her strength. Since moving to New York City in mid-2010, she has raced two half-marathons and has set her sights on her first marathon in 2011. She's also stoked to a part of the GHR team!  Henrietta has a BA(Hons) in Modern History and a Master's in Modern American History, both from the University of Oxford.

Ava Czapalay is a veteran of 13 marathons and 8 half-marathons. She began her running career in the 5000m and 10,000m in high school track, was distracted with playing soccer for many years, and then launched her marathon career in 2003 with the National Capital Marathon in Ottawa, Canada (4:17). Ava is one of only a few marathoners to have run all six of the very hilly Halifax International Blue Nose Marathons (the second marathon was held during a hurricane).  She lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia – on Canada’s East Coast – with her 3 children and dog – all runners. With a MEd in Education Psychology, she is the founding President of EduNova, an education and training export alliance.

Kamalah Chang works for Schlumberger, an oilfield services company. She ran on the track and cross country teams at the California Institute of Technology, where she majored in mechanical engineering.

Stephanie Hutson is an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, pursuing a degree in environmental science and archeology.  She was on the track and cross country teams at Brentsville High School, and is now on the UVA club cross country team.

Fran Weld is a graduate student in the School of Business at Stanford University.  She was the Director of Sustainability & Preservation for Struever Bros, Eccles & Rouse, an urban development company that specializes in mixed-use, historic preservation projects. She's worked on Fenway Park, the Durham Athletic Park, the Portland Pirates hockey rink in Maine, and the Rose Bowl. A double physics and material science major at MIT, Fran ran on her college cross country and track teams.

Stephanie Wuerth is a graduate student at the University of California Berkeley studying Earth & Planetary Science.  As an undergraduate in Geochemistry and English at the California Institute of Technology, she ran on the track and cross country. She also ran for Castle High School in Newburgh, IN.

Notable Races:

Janelle Ralph grew up in Oregon and earned her BS in Elementary Education from George Fox University. After graduation, she taught English in China for 1.5 years.  Afterwards, she married Ben and earned a Master's in Education.  In 2007, Ben's job took them to Terre Haute, Indiana.  She ran cross-country and track in both HS and college. Janelle also enjoys hiking, backpacking, biking, and hanging out with family and friends.  She currently substitute teaches and hopes to someday have her own 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade class.  She is currently on a quest to run a half-marathon in all 50 states while raising money for Team World Vision.

Grace Pederson earned her B.S. in civil engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Rose Nguyen earned her B.A. in History from Knox College where she ran on the XC and Track teams.  Running is her first passion, but now she also enjoys cycling and has competed in several duathlons.

Heather Huntsman is currently a graduate student in the Kinesiology department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign studying skeletal muscle at the cellular and molecular level. She received her BA from Bethel College, where she was also part of the basketball team, and her MS from George Washington University. For the last six years, she has attempted to make the endurance sport switch. She considers herself a triathlete, having completed two half ironman competitions in the last three years, but loves doing a variety of different sports. She would like to complete both the Boston Marathon and a full Ironman competition in the next three years.

Stephanie Law is a postdoctoral fellow in Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois.  She earned her Ph.D. in physics at the UIUC and her B.S. in physics from Iowa State University. She's a trail runner and ultrarunner.

Lea Karavias studied public relations and business administration in college at North Michigan and is currently in graduate school at the University of Denver studying Healthcare Management.  She is a triathlete and marathoner.
